What Metadata Does an MP4 File Contain?

MP4 is the world's most common video format, and its container structure is designed to store rich metadata alongside the video and audio streams. Metadata is stored in a hierarchy of atoms (sometimes called boxes) embedded in the file. The most privacy-sensitive atoms are written automatically by the device or software that recorded or processed the video.

A smartphone MP4 typically contains: GPS coordinates — latitude, longitude and altitude at the time of recording; device make and model — the exact phone or camera used; software string — the OS version or app that recorded the video (e.g. "iPhone OS 17.4"); creation date and time — precise to the second; modification date; rotation flag — whether the video was recorded in portrait or landscape; and sometimes a thumbnail frame.

Screen recordings and edited videos add further metadata: the encoder string identifies the software used (HandBrake, FFmpeg, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, etc.) and its version number, which can reveal your production environment.

When Does MP4 Metadata Matter?

Uploading to YouTube or TikTok strips most metadata, but direct file sharing preserves it completely. Common scenarios where MP4 metadata poses a real risk: sending a video clip by email or WhatsApp; sharing a clip on Telegram or Discord; uploading to cloud storage and sharing the link; submitting video evidence to journalists, lawyers or investigators; and publishing research or tutorial content online.

The GPS field in a video of your home interior can reveal your address. The encoder software field in a tutorial video can reveal what version of video editing software you are running — useful information for targeted malware attacks. Journalists submitting video clips from conflict zones have been identified from device metadata.

Frequently Asked Questions

What metadata does an MP4 file contain?

MP4 files store GPS coordinates, recording device make and model, software/OS version, creation and modification timestamps, video resolution and frame rate, audio sample rate, rotation flag and sometimes a thumbnail. Smartphones are the most prolific source of embedded GPS in MP4s.

Does removing metadata affect MP4 video quality?

No. MP4 metadata is stored in container atoms separate from the video and audio bitstreams. Removing metadata does not re-encode anything. Quality is bit-for-bit identical after cleaning.

Do messaging apps strip MP4 metadata?

WhatsApp compresses videos on sending which strips most metadata, but Telegram, email and direct iMessage video files often preserve it. Always clean before sharing if location privacy matters.
